What a good mobile RPG progression actually feels like
I've played enough mobile RPGs to recognize the lazy version of progression: bigger numbers, same fight. You level up, the enemy levels up, nothing really changes. The good games do something different, and Ashveil Chronicles is my current favorite example.
The trick is flexibility. When you can take a character built one way and completely reshape them, the game stays interesting far longer. Halfway through my last run I turned a healer into a debuffer and suddenly a wall of a boss became manageable. That moment of 'wait, I can do that?' is what keeps me playing.
Grind is almost unavoidable on mobile, but how a game handles it matters. Auto-resolving trivial fights means you save your brain for the encounters that deserve it. Games that force you to tap through every trash mob lose me fast.
If you're shopping for a new RPG, look past the opening cutscene. Ask whether the systems let you experiment. That's the difference between a game you drop in a week and one you finish.
